Baby Crib Mattress

A baby crib mattress needs to go with the crib that you purchased and will probably never have to be replaced if maintained decently. Baby crib matress size is regulated by the Federal government. The minimum size has been stipluated as 27 1/4” x 51 5/8” and thickness not more than 6 inches. Of course – one freak accident could damage the mattress beyond redemption, but there are some protective mechanisms you could employ to prevent this possibility.

Here are some things to consider while choosing a crib mattress

  • The most important thing is to make sure that the mattress fits snugly without leaving any gap. A gap could cause baby’s hands or legs to get stuck – posing suffocation risk.
  • The mattress should be firm and should be covered with a fitted sheet to reduce the risk of SIDS or other sleep related harm.
  • Look for the following certifications -i. CertiPUR-US which verifies that the polyurethane foam inside meets standards for content, emissions, and durability ii. GREENGUARD which certifies that the product meets strict emission limits.
  • Never get a used mattress as it tends to be unhygienic – dust mites, bugs and all kinds of germs might be present.
  • A light mattress is preferable anyday since you will be required to pick it up and move the mattress frequently-to change sheets, and to give it the much needed ventilation.
  • Foam or Innerspring – Innerspring mattresses are similar to adult mattresses – with an innerspring inside. The coils need to satisfy specifications – mattress with around 135-150 coils with a gauge of 15.5 or lower and need to have border rods. For all these reasons I would recommend a foam mattress any day as long as the quality is good.
  • Waterproof covers – Most baby mattresses will be subject to pee or poo and so having a waterprrof cover is a must.
